Dubai Municipality has launched the world's first certification and conformity marking system in 3D printing for the construction industry, which will serve as a proactive measure to streamline the process and improve the quality of concrete mixtures used in factories licensed and operating in Dubai.

This initiative plays a key role in enhancing Dubai's leadership position as the first city in the world to adopt a mark of conformity strategy for 3D printers for construction and to regulate this cutting-edge sustainable building technology.

Dawoud Al Hajri, Director General of Dubai Municipality, said: "In line with Dubai Municipality's positive vision, a certification and conformity marking system for factories and entities in the field of 3D printing for construction has been fully established. The system employs international best practices to deliver excellence to individuals and communities, thereby enhancing Dubai's global reputation and aligning with the strategic goals outlined by Dubai Municipality in the Dubai 2030 plan.

In addition, the system supports the Dubai 3D Printing Strategy launched by His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President, Prime Minister and Ruler of Dubai. The strategy aims to harness technology for human advancement and position the UAE and Dubai as an important regional and global hub for 3D printing technology."

"The new system is expected to make significant strides in streamlining 3D printing practices and procedures as well as improving the quality of concrete mixtures used in licensed plants."

Alia Al Harmoodi, CEO of Dubai Municipality's Environment, Health and Safety Authority (EHSSA), emphasized that the main focus of the new system includes assessing the quality of products and raw materials, ensuring the efficiency of manufacturing equipment and machinery, defining the technical standards of the manufacturing operations every stage of production, and ensuring the efficiency of management systems within the factories.

"In line with its efforts, Dubai Municipality has published on its website a comprehensive guide with four chapters covering the key requirements to be met by factories and entities engaged in 3D printing for the construction industry. The guide has a flexible and relevant design that clarifies the various methods and techniques used in the manufacture of concrete used in 3D printers, while also taking into account the different compositions and specifications of the materials used by companies."

The Dubai Central Laboratory and its team of experts, specialists, engineers and technicians will oversee the management of the new system in terms of product evaluation, audits and laboratory testing, in accordance with the approved technical principles and controls, as well as issuing certificates of conformity.

In recent years, the laboratory has developed various certification and quality marking systems that help improve product quality and ensure consumer protection in Dubai. This includes conformity certification programs for ready-mix concrete plants, precast concrete plants, and cement and chemical additives plants.

By integrating cutting-edge technologies such as 3D printing, construction projects can offer many benefits, such as reducing the chances of errors, minimizing waste of materials and natural resources used in mixtures such as water, aggregate and cement, and speeding up the completion of work with minimal manpower.
